Expanding Soap Experiment

How do the words simple and science sound together? That’s exactly what this Expanding Soap Experiment is! I’m so excited to share one of my favorite simple science experiments that gets children super excited. For this lesson you only need 3 things: ivory soap, a paper plate, and a microwave.
Here are the steps:
- Place the ivory soap on the paper plate and into the microwave.
- Set the microwave on High for about 2 minutes.
- Press “start” and watch the transformation!
See for yourself, what the process looks like!
I love this experiment because it’s great to encourage inquiry. Children begin to wonder what would happen if different variables are changed. They also get curious about what other types of soap do this and begin to request future experiments to test their curiosity. This type of inquiry, excitement, and questioning is exactly what we want to happen when we expose them to science! This simple yet rich experience is one that every teacher should try!
Happy Experimenting!
LOVE IT! Will try it as soon ASAP, just have to find away to get the microwave out of the lounge:)
AWESOME! So glad you like it Wenonah! Perhaps you can schedule to take your class in the lounge at a time when it may be vacant if it’s big enough to fit groups of them!
